LucidPix

A 3D photo generator app

Overview

Lucid has built up an enormous database of 3D graphical data that allows photos taken by any dual camera to be trained and matches the performance of other hardware depth systems. Lucid creates a new 3D photo generator app – LucidPix. Which can let the user create a 3D photo with their own dual camera device without other tools.

My Role

Goal

3D-photo is a new trend in graphic market, where most audience are not familiar with the product. We want to educate the user about our product and increase the download rate.

The Problem

Now Lucid has the product but haven’t find the right market to fit in the product. Finding the best way to educate users about the product is also an important part.

Challenge 1There isn’t sophisticated use case or market for 3D-photo Different companies have made their attempts with various technologies, such as AI, AR or VR aim at breaking through user’s flat visual experience. The key is to figure out the most suitable way for user to take in 3D visual experience.
Challenge 2Users don’t know what 3D-photo isSince this is a new industry, so there are different definitions on “what is 3D-photo?”. Many users think a photo is 3D, if they can rotate their view-point for 360 degrees.
Challenge 3Sharing the photo to social media is complex to userThere is a technical issue with connection to Facebook’s 3D photo API, which makes our app’s user cannot share the photo directly on Facebook.
How could we let more user know what's 3D photo and what to use it?

User Research

Megan and I leveraged different channels to collect the data points. Megan focused on getting input from all kinds of 3D-photo sharing groups on Facebook (new users), whereas I mostly focusing on company’s communication channel, such as Lucid’s newsletter and Lucid’s social media accounts (existing users). We combined our result together and found some overlaps in the user base.

Target Audience

Based on our research we conducted to two personas for future design

Primary

30 - 40 years old designer who
interested in high tech products.

Secondary

22 - 28 years old people who are active on social media platform, and interested in exploring different types of photos.

UX Design

Before we start to design, we have schedule a meeting with CEO, Design Lead and RD department to discuss what are our priorities and what is the best way to work with the RD department. We narrow it down to two tasks:

1. How to let more people download the app
2. How to let user understand what is 3D photo?

Among these 2 tasks, we figure the first task is our top priority. The reason we make this decision is that, the more real users we have for our app, the more usage data, and real user feedback we can gather to help improve and accelerate our future decision-making, based on statistics and data analytics.

Task 1: How to let more people download the app

1.1 Sharing LucidPix to Facebook

It is hard to force someone to do something, so the best way to let the people around you to know something is “sharing”. The same can be said if we need more organic download and let more people know about the product. The best way is let our user to share their experience. In our Bate testing system, the result we receive from Andy Yang (Design Lead) is about 85% of user fail on the “share to Facebook”. We find out two main points that cause the user cannot share the 3D picture successfully
• The tutorial video for sharing to Facebook is too slow for the user, so many users doesn’t finish the tutorial and jump to next step.
• We cannot directly link to Facebook

Adjustment

Our first attempt is to break down the prolong tutorial into 3 static graphical instructions, however it doesn’t give us expected improvement, since the static pictures wasn’t able to clearly reflects the difference of normal picture sharing vs. 3D-photo sharing, thus the customers’ 3D-photo sharing success rate hasn’t increase.

In the second attempt, we break the tutorial into three pages of shorter Gif, that user can swipe through manually. In comparison with the previous attempt, it not only shortens the time, but also leveraging motional instruction to guide user through the steps in a more natural way without making them to think a lot.

In addition, when communicate with RD department, we emphasize the importance of adding a feature that allow user to link to Facebook directly. Because of the challenges we mentioned above, that Facebook doesn’t open up their 3D-photo sharing API, user cannot share the 3D photo directly within our app. But we are able to implement the second-best solution. At the end of the tutorial, we give user an option to jump to Facebook home page, which is the starting point of the flow, so user can follow the tutorial and share their 3D photo.
According to our daily aggregated statistics, we gladly confirm that, the success rate of user sharing 3D-photo on Facebook has increase by 20%

1.2 Sharing LucidPix to different platforms

We got many feedback from users that they want to be able to share on other social platforms not just Facebook. This is a challenge for us, because right now only Facebook can support viewing 3D effect. When viewing the 3D photos, we need to flutter our phone to view the 3D depth effect. Since other platforms cannot support 3D effect, how could we help users share to different platforms?

Adjustment

From the company’s perspective, we still prefer our user to share on Facebook because it supports 3D viewing. So, we communicate with Han Jin (CEO), and explained that we can put other platforms into a lower layer, that user can see by clicking on “more options”. This way, it also helps to separate the sharing flow with Facebook, because the sharing flow is different.

For other platforms, we helped our user to generate a short video that they can post to any platforms. The video captures and demonstrates how the 3D effect looks like when user flutter their phone.

After we launch this feature, statistics show that 20% of the 3D photo sharing are through Instagram.

1.3 Download Rate

Through the release of new sharing flow, LucidPix download rate has increased tremendously

Task 2: How to let user understand what is 3D photo?

2.1 Building Community Feature

Building community can provide us various values, including educate users about the application, improve customer stickiness, and increase customer interaction, etc.

We hope to leverage the new community function to showcase featured 3D photos, that can help user easily understand what is 3D photo, and make them aware of how our application helps powering 3D visual experience.

The idea of building community feature, originated from a market distribution research. At the beginning, our investor wants us to show our differentiation with the large number of photo editing apps on the market. So we conducted market research and find out that photo edit/beauty app covers 50% of the market, photo community app covers 20% and photography app covers 30%. Compare to the other 2 categories, we clearly see more potential in 3D photo community app. Therefore, we want to niche to the market by implementing our own community system in addition to our 3D photo technology.

We create multiple versions of design and our final design is on the right-hand side.

Decision Reason

• On the Gallery page, we display two columns, because it can display more demo pictures to the user at the same time.
• As our community feature is still in its early stage, we want to provide an easy transition for our users. Thus, we created a menu bar, which allow our user to pages back and forth easily.

This final design just got into RD department and will be released at the end of September on Taiwan’s app store.
